Which Way You Go

If one does not know to which port one is sailing, no wind is favourable.
– Seneca

Alice: “Would you tell me, please, which way I ought to go from here?”
Cheshire Cat: “That depends a good deal on where you want to get to.”
Alice: “I don’t much care where –”
Cheshire Cat: “Then it doesn’t matter which way you go.”
– Lewis Carroll

Because strait is the gate, and narrow is the way, which leadeth unto life, and few there be that find it.
– Jesus Christ (Matthew 7:14)

I am the way, the truth, and the life: no man cometh unto the Father, but by me.
– Jesus Christ (John 14:6)

Conversations with Job

(post by Michael Gleason)

Man

Job

What is man, that thou shouldest magnify him? and that thou shouldest set thine heart upon him? And that thou shouldest visit him every morning, and try him every moment?
(Job 7:17-18)

David

LORD, what is man, that thou takest knowledge of him! or the son of man, that thou makest account of him! Man is like to vanity: his days are as a shadow that passeth away.
(Psalms 144:3-4)

When I consider thy heavens, the work of thy fingers, the moon and the stars, which thou hast ordained; What is man, that thou art mindful of him? and the son of man, that thou visitest him?
For thou hast made him a little lower than the angels, and hast crowned him with glory and honour.
Thou madest him to have dominion over the works of thy hands; thou hast put all things under his feet: All sheep and oxen, yea, and the beasts of the field; The fowl of the air, and the fish of the sea, and whatsoever passeth through the paths of the seas.
(Psalms 8:3-8)

Arresting Developments

There will never be peaceful coexistence between an increasingly corrupt society and a Gospel-proclaiming, holy church.  Either society’s decline will be arrested, or Christians will be.

Yea, and all that will live godly in Christ Jesus shall suffer persecution.
– Paul (II Timothy 3:12)

Boiling Away

Many of our problems boil down to pride.  We would do better to keep boiling away until the pride evaporates, too.

Humble yourselves therefore under the mighty hand of God, that he may exalt you in due time:
– Peter (I Peter 5:6)

2012 WordPress Annual Report — a Dumb Message, etc

I’ve now been informed that if page views (hits) on my blog were films, “this blog would power 7 (Cannes) Film Festivals.”  Well, ok.  If sneezes were cards, my last cold wouldn’t have even been a full deck.  So what?  If dumb statements were Prime Ministers, WordPress just sent me David Cameron.  (This is NOT intended as a reflection on the intelligence of Mr Cameron’s statements, and shame on you for thinking it was :).)

If you are looking for spiritual insight today, beyond the insight that Christians can have fun, too, you might skip this post.  It’s not likely to get any better than that last paragraph.

The Sight of Blood

How many times has a parent seen it?  A little boy falls and runs to Mummy, not really hurt, but upset.  And then, suddenly, he notices — his elbow is bleeding!  The tears, that had almost stopped, now come in a flood, and his decibel level skyrockets until the whole neighbourhood hears of the disaster!  His injury isn’t any worse than it was, but now that he’s seen the BLOOD, he REALLY needs to cry. 🙂

“Christmas Day for Dolly”

In December 1745, while playing with his daughter Dolly, John Byrom promised he would write something for her for Christmas.  Dolly reminded her Daddy every day until Christmas, and on that morning, she found an envelope from her father.  Now known as “Christians, Awake, Salute the Happy Morn,” the original title which her father gave it was “Christmas Day for Dolly.”
