Effort and Appreciation

A man does not appreciate at its full worth the thing that comes to him without effort.
-Sir Arthur Conan Doyle

I have fought a good fight, I have finished my course, I have kept the faith:  Henceforth there is laid up for me a crown of righteousness, which the Lord, the righteous judge, shall give me at that day: and not to me only, but unto all them also that love his appearing.
-Paul, II Timothy 4:7-8

A “Racing Certainty”

“Racing Certainty” — something guaranteed to happen.  If insiders did bet on Justin Welby’s appointment, they defrauded the bookies by betting on a racing certainty.

Another “racing certainty” — when doctrinal corruption takes a church, moral corruption follows, for without truth, there is no sanctification.  Where there is no purity of truth, there will be no purity of life.

John 17:17

Sanctify them through thy truth: thy word is truth.

When Bookmakers are More “Moral” than a Church

“Holy and without blemish”?  Even with all of its problems, I never thought I’d read THIS about the Church of England.

The “Last” March of the Ents / To Give a Life, to Gain by Losing

Of course, it is likely enough, my friends, likely enough that we are going to our doom:  the last march of the Ents.  But if we stayed at home and did nothing, doom would find us anyway, sooner or later.  That thought has long been growing in our hearts; and that is why we are marching now.  It was not a hasty resolve.  Now at least the last march of the Ents may be worth a song.  Aye, we may help the other peoples before we pass away.
-Treebeard the Ent, on the road to Isengard

The Ents are going to wake up and find that they are strong.
-Gandalf, speaking of the march of the Ents

Whosoever shall seek to save his life shall lose it; and whosoever shall lose his life shall preserve it.
Jesus Christ, Luke 17:33

According to my earnest expectation and my hope, that in nothing I shall be ashamed, but that with all boldness, as always, so now also Christ shall be magnified in my body, whether it be by life, or by death.  For to me to live is Christ, and to die is gain.
Paul, from prison in Rome, Philippians 1:20-21

Fear none of those things which thou shalt suffer: behold, the devil shall cast some of you into prison, that ye may be tried; and ye shall have tribulation ten days: be thou faithful unto death, and I will give thee a crown of life.
The Risen Lord, to the church at Smyrna, Revelation 2:10

-Treebeard the Ent, on the road to Isengard

Greater love hath no man than this, that a man lay down his life for his friends.
Jesus Christ, the night before His death, John 15:13

For scarcely for a righteous man will one die: yet peradventure for a good man some would even dare to die.  But God commendeth his love toward us, in that, while we were yet sinners, Christ died for us.
Paul, Romans 5:7-8

See then that ye walk circumspectly, not as fools, but as wise, Redeeming the time, because the days are evil.

Quick! Dig Yourself in Deeper!

Earlier this week, I posted about the BBC’s involvement in recent scandals, and their transparent attempts to change the subject (Quick!  Talk About Something Different!) from their own scandals.

Today, it got worse — much, much worse.
