A “Rapid and Shallow” Generation is Nothing New

The More Things Change…

The Ebro, as all the world knows–or will pretend to know, being an ignorant and vain world — runs through the city of Saragossa. It is a river, moreover, which should be accorded the sympathy of this generation, for it is at once rapid and shallow.
-Henry Seton Merriman (1901 AD)

And the LORD heard the voice of your words, and was wroth, and sware, saying, Surely there shall not one of these men of this evil generation see that good land…
– Moses (around 1400 BC, Deuteronomy 1:34-35)

There is a generation that are pure in their own eyes, and yet is not washed from their filthiness.
-Agur (perhaps in Hezekiah’s time 700 BC, Proverbs 30:12)

…the LORD hath rejected and forsaken the generation of his wrath.
Jeremiah (around 600 BC, Jeremiah 7:29)

O faithless and perverse generation, how long shall I be with you? how long shall I suffer you?
– Jesus Christ our Lord (around 30 AD, Matthew 17:17)

Save yourselves from this untoward generation.
– Peter (around 32 AD, Acts 2:40)

This know also, that in the last days perilous times shall come.  For men shall be lovers of their own selves, covetous, boasters, proud, blasphemers, disobedient to parents, unthankful, unholy,
Paul, on the generation of the last days, II Timothy 3:1-2

…The More Things Stay the Same

If it
always has been
always will be
that bad…

we’d better do this:

Do all things without murmurings and disputings: That ye may be blameless and harmless, the sons of God, without rebuke, in the midst of a crooked and perverse nation, among whom ye shine as lights in the world;
– Paul (for all times and places, Philippians 2:14-15)
