I tend to think visually, rather than using auditory or kinaesthetic models. I see God’s way as a straight line and Satan’s a a large diameter circle which at first does not seem to be taking you away from God’s way, but by the time you realise, that you are traveling in a different direction, you are quite a way from the path that God had set out for you. Think of walking on some rough moorland and finding out you are on the wrong path, Your choice is either to retrace your steps until you get to the right path, or to walk across rough ground, making relatively slow progress until you reach the right path. Both take time and effort but there is no way to get to where ytou want to be without expending that time and effort.
Good thoughts, Fred. It’s a good thing the Holy Spirit dwells inside us to guide us in the straight path, or we’d be off-course all the time. If we follow the clear warnings of Scripture, we still might drift a little bit (such is the sinful human condition), but it won’t be long before the Spirit opens our eyes to where we are.
