The Withered Fig Tree — The Old Testament Symbolism

I’ve written several articles on “Passion Tuesday” (the events of the Tuesday before Christ’s crucifixion), but I want to continue the series by backing up one day to look at an event on “Passion Monday” — the cursing of the fig tree.  (Consider this a bonus to the “Passion Tuesday” series thrown in at no extra charge. :))

This is much more than a story of a simple fig tree, so we’ll take more than one post to look at it.

God’s Investment

Philippians 1:6

Being confident of this very thing, that he which hath begun a good work in you will perform it until the day of Jesus Christ:

I preached on this verse on Sunday.  In a discussion later, Shellie Smith said, “He has too much invested in us to just let us go.”

God’s Investment — The Father

John 3:16

For God so loved the world, that he gave his only begotten Son, that whosoever believeth in him should not perish, but have everlasting life.

God’s Investment — The Son

I Peter 1:18-19

18 Forasmuch as ye know that ye were not redeemed with corruptible things, as silver and gold, from your vain conversation received by tradition from your fathers;
19 But with the precious blood of Christ, as of a lamb without blemish and without spot:

God’s Investment — The Spirit

Ephesians 1:13-14

13 …in whom also after that ye believed, ye were sealed with that holy Spirit of promise,
14 Which is the earnest of our inheritance….

The husbands of the talkative have a great reward hereafter.

The Inspiration of Scripture — Summary

This is a summary (for the menu) of a series of posts on the meaning of the Greek word theopneustos (translated “given by inspiration of God”) in II Timothy 3:16.  It is part of a much longer series on Bibliology (the doctrine of Scriptures) based on a series of sermons I preached called “That Book in Your Hand.”

I dealt with Inspiration at length because of its importance and because well-known theologians (led by Benjamin Warfield) caused confusion, redefining the word away from Biblical and historical usage.  This was not for nefarious purposes (Warfield said exactly what he was doing), but most theologians have uncritically adopted his usage, and modern translations such as the ESV have unfortunately followed him in translating this verse.

Seeking Blessings

The way to be blessed is not to run after blessings, but to consider the Source of the blessings, and to be in touch with the Source.
