Dull, or Boring?

Again in the “Just for Fun” category.

Apparently the signwriter didn’t like Sandy when he visited there

I grew up 15 miles from Boring, and when we were in Portland in October my 11-year-old, for some reason, wanted a picture of this sign. 🙂 DON’T use the picture without her permission — as the youngest of six, she is quite militant about protecting her rights!

Last Saturday, we drove within a mile of Dull (and fittingly, didn’t even know it was there).

For an Oregonian now in Scotland, news of a Dull–Boring link is absolutely phenomenal, and all should be thankful for the initiative of the Dull Women’s Book Club.

As a kid, I was always intrigued by the fact that Boring is on the road to Damascus — Saul certainly didn’t find that road to be boring (Acts 9:1-8).

“Everything Works out in the End”

Ever hear someone say that?  For many people in our society, that is their creed, their statement of faith.  I thought of it when I read this:

Faith in tomorrow, instead of Christ, is Satan’s nurse for man’s perdition.
-George Barrell Cheever

The Sufficiency of Scripture (part one)

“That Book in Your Hand”

For a variety of reasons, I’ve left my Bibliology series on hold for a while, but I’ll return and finish it (I finished preaching it long ago).  My eighth sermon in the series was on the doctrine of the Sufficiency of Scripture.

This doctrine is the antidote to the man-exalting traditionalism of many mainline churches (Catholic and Protestant), the dangerous mysticism of modern “pop” Christianity, the pseudo-authority of God-ignoring psychology, the famous-preacher-worship of much of evangelicalism, and the cancerous imperial minister syndrome that infects many independent churches (Baptists and others).

The Sins We Talk About

(recycling an old thought today that’s been “percolating” for a long time)

The Sins We Give the Most Attention

    • The kind of sin that the other guy does, and that I don’t do.
    • The kind of sin that I do, but nobody knows about it.

We’re experts, we discuss these for hours

The Sins We Go Easy On

    • The kind of sin that I do, and everyone knows about it.
    • The kind of sin that someone I love does.

Our eloquence disappears

Hypocrisy at its root is Pride

May our merciful Lord teach us humility.

Stupid Spammers

In the “Just for Fun” category.

WordPress comes with something called Akismet, which does a pretty good job of filtering out spam comments.  But every once in a while, a real comment gets thrown into spam, so I scan through them occasionally to see.  Some of these are funny / stupid / amazing.

Saying ‘Thank You’

If we really believed that God is all-wise and all-loving, we would say ‘thank you’ when He doesn’t give us what we ask.

Barking at Buoys

Last week, we had to go to the Lake District while two of our kids took exams at St. Bees School.  We suffered through the best weather of the year while hiking, boating, playing on the beach, etc.  It’s a tough life! 🙂
