So Who’s at the Next Table, Anyway?

I’m thankful for my two “restaurant experiences”, one sad, one humourous. In one, I heard that which shouldn’t have been said anywhere. In the other, the words were harmless. Both cases reminded me of the need to give consideration to the question: “Who might be listening?” Ultimately, both cases reminded me of the importance of considering the One who is always listening.

Gluten-Free Music — When Standards Clash

This post isn’t really about music, it is about love. If love is our guide, it will kill the so-called “worship wars” that many churches suffer. We can’t feed “spiritual gluten” to those who will be made ill by it, and if pastors and worship leaders push music on those who believe that music to be sin, they are themselves sinning, no matter who is right and who is wrong about the music in question.

Finding Christ in Proverbs — and Finding Proverbs in Christ

Proverbs, for all its work of conviction of sin, as a schoolmaster, is also a book of hope. If our case was hopeless, if there were no way for God to be pleased with us, the entire book would be wasted words spoken to wasted hearts. Proverbs, after knocking us into the pit of despair by revealing our desperate conviction, says to us, “God gives wisdom. Do not despair. God can and will be pleased with you, if you follow wisdom and the fear of the Lord. He will make a way.” Continue reading
