Sometimes Miracles are Overrated

John the Baptist apparently never worked a miracle.
Apparently Judas Iscariot did.

Matthew 7:22-23

22 Many will say to me in that day, Lord, Lord, have we not prophesied in thy name? and in thy name have cast out devils? and in thy name done many wonderful works?
23 And then will I profess unto them, I never knew you: depart from me, ye that work iniquity.

Thoughts on the Olympics — Honour to Whom Honour

The men’s 400 metres held some interesting stories as the London Olympics began.  Making the race intriguing were Lashawn Merritt, the defending champion but fighting injury; Oscar Pistorius (the “Blade Runner”), the first double leg amputee to compete in the Olympics; and the young guns, 18-year-old Luguelin Santos of the Dominican Republic, and most of all 19-year-old Kirani James of Grenada, who last year became the youngest world champion ever in the event.

Scorching the Truth

Truth often suffers more by the heat of its defenders, than from the arguments of its opposers.
– William Penn

Let your speech be alway with grace, seasoned with salt, that ye may know how ye ought to answer every man.
– Apostle Paul (Colossians 4:6)

Recommending a New Blog

Actually, it’s a whole website.  Pastor Scott Markle is on the web with Shepherding the Flock Ministries.  From the “Burden” page:

I am deeply burdened that churches and Christians have forsaken the truth of God’s faithful Word and have replaced it with the thoughts of men’s faulty wisdom. The truth and wisdom of God’s Word is no longer considered, studied, proclaimed, honored, or obeyed. This is the way of spiritual destruction to the ruin of our lives.

The blog is up and running.  There is also the facility to buy his books, the first of which I have read and can recommend.

In general, I suspect I can recommend almost everything Pastor Markle writes — he is committed to the Word.  Even where you might differ from him on some interpretation, you will find him serious about the truth of the Word and careful in his study.  He guest-posted the Motivated by the Promise of His Coming series here last year, which I greatly appreciated because of his practical applicational approach to prophetic study.  He writes with a view towards edifying the saints by presenting the Word.

Same Author

It’s amazing how often there is either a parallel example or direct teaching in Scripture that fits so well with things going on in the world around us.

It’s almost as if the Author of History is also the Author of the Book.

Bible Translation — Anchored Authority

“That Book in Your Hand”

How much authority does your translation,”That Book in Your Hand,” really have?  Should we shrug it off as just a translation?  That’s what the Mormons have historically done, saying it is true as far as it is accurately translated, and then largely disregarding anything that is uncomfortable to their beliefs because “it must not have been translated correctly.”  Or should we say, as some have, “I don’t care what the Greek says, I want to know what the Bible in my hand says?”

“I Don’t Want to Hear You Encouraging Others to Drink”

I’ve never seen a beer commercial featuring battered children, broken lives, fractured families, or teenage amputees.
— Steve Hafler

In God’s providence, Pastor Hafler preached on Christian liberty and the dangers of alcohol, then wrote on it on his blog just before his sister-in-law was killed by a drunken driver.  We can see it as a tragic coincidence, or we can see it as a sovereign God ordaining that this would be written at such a time to draw attention to his warning.

If you’ve ever profited by anything I’ve written or said, and if you ever drink alcohol, I’m asking a favour in return.  Please take the time to read the links I’m providing in this post.  They aren’t unbalanced, they don’t twist the Scriptures, and they give an important warning about how we view our Christian liberty.
