Minimising, Maximising

This thought from a recent sermon on Caleb in Joshua 14, which I referenced again in today’s sermon on Jehoshaphat in II Chronicles 20:12.  Both of these men faced enemies which were powerful and dangerous, and neither played down the problem.  Both faced the problem head on in its full magnitude.

Faith doesn’t Minimise Difficulties

Faith Maximises God

If we minimise the difficulties, we minimise the magnitude of God’s deliverance.  Faith doesn’t do that.  Faith is honest about the difficulties, but magnifies God as the One who is able to overcome those difficulties.

Entering the Modern Age!

Free Baptist Church now has a Facebook Page (https://www.facebook.com/Free-Baptist-Church-Glenrothes-112349003476308), a Twitter Page (@GlenFreeBaptist), and (Lord-willing) an active-again pastor’s blog.

I even use PowerPoint in my sermons now.  Old dogs can learn new tricks!  Anyway, we’ve decided we need to increase our Internet presence, so here goes!

If you have left a comment in the last 3 years, it’s still sitting in moderation, and I apologise, I will try to move through them quickly.

Drug Abuse and the Christian

This blog has been dormant for a while.  I hope to “wake it up” soon (and I see a backlog of comments that need to go through moderation).  This article is not a “waking up”, really.

I wrote the following, this weekend, for someone who had a loved one, a professing Christian, who was abusing drugs.  In part because of the help it provided, he has checked into a Christian drug rehabilitation centre in America, a wonderful answer to a long-term prayer request.

His relatives asked me to make it public so that it might help others.  After removing personal details and with minor modifications, here it is.  This is a painful topic to many families and I am closing comments on this post, but I can be contacted through my contact page if needed.

It’s ALWAYS a Good Time to Teach Your Kids

I wanted to post this a week ago, but it’s been a very busy week for me, so the blog has had to wait.

A few weeks ago, I posted A New Name, Written Down in Glory, as our church rejoiced over the salvation of a young boy who had placed his trust in Christ.  Last Sunday, we again had glorious news and were able to sing that song again.  Another child had come to Christ on her way to school one morning that week.

Named Persons and Liam Fee

Today, the Scottish Parliament is debating the “Named Persons” legislation.  The BBC is reporting that the governing SNP is “committed” to the legislation.

Last week, two perverse, wicked people were convicted for murdering a two year old boy here in our community.  I’m not going to link to any of the articles on this, because I do not recommend filling your mind with the horrible details published (apparently they can’t publish the worst details).  If you really feel a need to know, use Google for “Liam Fee.”  Avoid the tabloids, the BBC’s coverage is more than enough detail.

If Jesus is Interceding for Us….

A quick thought from our Bible Study this week.

Hebrews 7:25

Wherefore he is able also to save them to the uttermost that come unto God by him, seeing he ever liveth to make intercession for them.

This verse tells us that Jesus is interceding for us, speaking to the Father on our behalf.  This is a present and continuing work of our Saviour.  The next time you are tempted to sin, remember, the Son is talking to the Father about you.  Will you yield to temptation, will you sin, while the One who died for you is pleading your case in Heaven?

Well, will you?

Something to think about, isn’t it?

Voting, “Lesser of Two Evils”, and Scripture (Part I)

On occasion, someone makes a comment on one of my posts that stimulates my thinking to write a long response.  If the topic at hand is one of importance to many of my readers, I may “front page it” with a full article.  This time, it will be more than one article. 🙂

Some American Christians believe one candidate in the upcoming election is a good choice for Christians to support, but others find both major candidates unacceptable.  This article is not intended to make that evaluation, but to provide some Scriptural perspective on the question of voting generally, especially in a case where one feels neither candidate is a good choice.  I hope to add a later article on some Biblical principles for evaluating candidates.

There are many questions we face for which Scripture gives no direct answer, but we can find principles that apply.  The Scriptural principles in this first part apply to believers who have been given the opportunity to vote in any nation, whether they think they have good choices or not.
